Running your own business or earning by commission can make a bank application awkward, even when the money coming in is solid. Without regular pay stubs, a lender's standard checklist may not fit, and one weaker year or an old credit problem can lead to a quick no. Car Loan Finder is not a lender. We match you with lenders that know how to read self-employed income and imperfect credit, and checking your options is a soft inquiry that leaves your credit score as it is. You get a clear picture before any lender pulls your full report.

North Vancouver is about 7 km away and Vancouver, the province's largest city, about 9 km, which puts a wide choice of dealers within a short trip. Burnaby and Richmond are about 17 and 18 km out, New Westminster about 23 km, and Port Moody, Gibsons and Coquitlam between about 25 and 28 km. West Vancouver itself spans four postal areas: V7S, V7T, V7V and V7W. Lenders ask for proof of address to confirm residency, but your approval can be used at any licensed dealer in the surrounding areas.

Compare car lenders in West Vancouver

Where you borrow matters as much as your credit score. Banks and credit unions usually offer the lowest rates but expect good credit; specialist lenders approve more credit profiles at higher rates. Here is how the options compare.

Getting approved in West Vancouver: a practical plan

  1. 1 Check your credit report You can get your credit report free from both Equifax and TransUnion. Dispute any errors before a lender sees them.
  2. 2 Set your budget Use the payment table above to find a payment that leaves room for insurance, fuel and maintenance.
  3. 3 Get pre-approved A pre-approval shows your likely rate and limit before you choose a car. Checking your options with Car Loan Finder is a soft inquiry.
  4. 4 Compare the total cost of borrowing Lenders must disclose the APR and total cost of borrowing in writing. Compare that figure, not only the monthly payment.
  5. 5 Keep the term as short as you can afford Longer terms lower the payment but cost more interest and raise the risk of owing more than the car is worth.

Your credit situation, explained

Bankruptcy or consumer proposal

A first bankruptcy usually stays on your Equifax report for 6 years after discharge; a consumer proposal stays until 3 years after you complete it. Specialist lenders can approve you before those dates — often with a down payment.

No credit history

If you are new to Canada or have never borrowed, lenders look at income, employment and residency instead of a score. A larger down payment or a co-signer improves your options.

Self-employed

Expect to show recent bank statements and your Notices of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency instead of pay stubs.

Rebuilding after missed payments

On-time car payments are reported to the credit bureaus by most lenders. Choosing a payment you can always make is the fastest way to rebuild.

Proving income without a pay stub

Lenders that work with self-employed borrowers usually ask for recent bank statements and your Notices of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency. The statements show money arriving steadily; the notices confirm what you reported. If you incorporated recently or changed how you pay yourself, a short letter from your accountant explaining the change can help the file make sense.

Commission and contract earners face a similar test. Expect to show a longer income history so the lender can average out strong and weak months. Keeping business and personal spending in separate accounts makes your statements easier to read, and paying down a credit card balance before you apply can improve the debt ratio a lender calculates.

What 48 months costs across credit levels

A short term is attractive when income varies, because the loan is gone sooner. At the 6.59% bank average reported by the Bank of Canada for August 2026, $25,000 over 48 months costs about $594 a month. At a good-credit rate of 9.50%, the same loan is about $628. Published estimates put excellent scores (760–900) at 5–8% and good scores (660–759) at 7–12%.

If your score sits lower, the 48 month payment climbs quickly: about $702 at a fair-credit 15.50% and about $857 at a poor-credit 27.00%. In that case, a longer term with the freedom to pay extra in strong months can be a better fit. Ask whether the loan allows lump-sum payments without a penalty.

Price, PST and the full cost of the vehicle

In British Columbia, the 5% GST and 7% PST add about $3,000 to a $25,000 purchase. On more expensive passenger vehicles the PST rate steps up beyond 7%, so a higher sticker price raises both the tax and the amount you finance. Ask the dealer to show the tax rate being applied before you settle on a model.

Any dealer you buy from should be licensed or registered with the Vehicle Sales Authority of British Columbia (VSA), the provincial regulator. Basic coverage comes from ICBC, and the lender needs proof of insurance before you take delivery, so request your quote while you compare vehicles. Winter tires are also required on most designated BC highways from October 1 to April 30.

  • Winter tires (marked M+S or with the mountain-snowflake symbol) are required on most designated BC highways from October 1 to April 30. Check DriveBC for your routes.
  • PST on passenger vehicles rises above 7% for higher purchase prices.

West Vancouver car loan questions

Can I get a car loan in West Vancouver if I'm self-employed?

Yes. Lenders that handle self-employed income typically ask for recent bank statements and your CRA Notices of Assessment instead of pay stubs. Steady deposits and filed taxes matter more than the format of your income.

How many years of tax documents will a lender want?

It varies by lender, but your most recent Notices of Assessment are the starting point. If your income changed recently, a longer history helps the lender see the trend. Have the documents ready before you apply to avoid delays.

Will business write-offs lower the income a lender sees?

They can, because lenders often look at the income you reported to the Canada Revenue Agency. Bank statements showing regular deposits help fill in the picture. A larger down payment also reduces how much income the lender needs to see.

Does PST change on a more expensive car in British Columbia?

Yes. The base PST is 7%, but the rate on passenger vehicles rises above that at higher purchase prices. Together with the 5% GST, tax on a $25,000 vehicle comes to about $3,000.

Is there a legal limit on car loan interest?

Yes. The Criminal Code caps interest at 35%, a limit in force since January 1, 2025. Published estimates for poor scores (300–559) reach that ceiling, so improving your score before applying can matter.

Does Car Loan Finder pull my full credit report?

No. We check your options with a soft inquiry, which does not affect your credit score. The lender you choose makes a hard inquiry only when it formally reviews your application.
