When your credit has taken a hit, the hardest part of a car loan is often judging whether the rate you are offered is fair. Equifax-based estimates give a useful yardstick: 5% to 8% for excellent scores, 7% to 12% for good, 12% to 19% for fair and 19% to 35% for poor. Car Loan Finder is a matching service, not a lender. We look at your situation with a soft inquiry that does not affect your credit score, then show you lenders suited to your band, so you can measure each offer against those ranges instead of guessing.

At about 168 km from Montréal, the province's largest city, a buyer in Hull has a closer set of nearby communities in which to compare dealers and offers. Gatineau is roughly 5 km away, while Luskville and Val-des-Monts are about 24 km off, Wakefield about 26 km, L'Ange-Gardien about 27 km and Masson-Angers about 28 km. Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette and Quyon sit near 38 and 39 km. Hull's four postal areas are J8X, J8Y, J8Z and J9A, and vehicles registered here follow Quebec's rules on insurance and winter tires.

Banks vs. specialist lenders in Hull

Where you borrow matters as much as your credit score. Banks and credit unions usually offer the lowest rates but expect good credit; specialist lenders approve more credit profiles at higher rates. Here is how the options compare.

Banks vs. specialist lenders in Hull
Lender Best for How rates are set Watch out for
Bank Good to excellent credit Usually priced above prime; close to the 6.59% bank average Stricter approval; may require a larger down payment with lower scores
Credit union Members with fair to good credit Set by each credit union; often competitive with banks Membership required; rules vary by province
Manufacturer finance New vehicles, good credit Promotional rates set by the automaker A low rate may replace a cash rebate — compare both
Specialist (subprime) lender Bad credit, proposals, newcomers Higher fixed rates, up to the 35% legal maximum Read the total cost of borrowing before you sign
Buy here, pay here dealer When other lenders decline Often the highest rates allowed Limited vehicle choice; payments may not be reported to credit bureaus

Your Hull car loan, step by step

  1. 1 Know your score band Canadian credit scores range from 300 to 900. Find your Equifax band in the rate table to estimate your rate.
  2. 2 Gather documents Recent pay stubs or bank statements, a valid driver’s licence and proof of your Hull address.
  3. 3 Apply once, compare offers One application can reach several lenders, so you avoid multiple hard credit checks.
  4. 4 Watch for add-ons Extended warranties and insurance products added to the loan increase what you borrow. Ask for prices separately.
  5. 5 Sign only when the numbers match Check that the APR, term and total cost of borrowing on the contract match what you were quoted.

Car loans for every credit situation

Bankruptcy or consumer proposal

A first bankruptcy usually stays on your Equifax report for 6 years after discharge; a consumer proposal stays until 3 years after you complete it. Specialist lenders can approve you before those dates — often with a down payment.

No credit history

If you are new to Canada or have never borrowed, lenders look at income, employment and residency instead of a score. A larger down payment or a co-signer improves your options.

Self-employed

Expect to show recent bank statements and your Notices of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency instead of pay stubs.

Rebuilding after missed payments

On-time car payments are reported to the credit bureaus by most lenders. Choosing a payment you can always make is the fastest way to rebuild.

Measuring an offer against the credit bands

Before you look at the monthly payment, look at the rate and compare it with your band. If your Equifax score is in the fair range, 560 to 659, an offer at 15.50% sits well inside the usual 12% to 19% spread. An offer in the high twenties for the same score deserves questions: ask what is driving it, and whether a down payment or shorter term would bring it down.

The Bank of Canada's August 2026 figures help too. Chartered banks averaged 6.59% on new auto loans and 6.83% on existing ones, while the prime rate stood at 4.45% in October 2026. Those numbers describe borrowers with strong files, but they show how far your rate sits from the top tier and how much there is to gain by rebuilding.

Where the 35% ceiling fits in

Since January 1, 2025, the Criminal Code has set the criminal interest rate at 35% a year. Any car loan above that is illegal, and the cap includes fees that count toward the cost of credit, not just the advertised rate. If a contract's total cost of credit looks out of line with the rate quoted, ask for the calculation in writing.

Rates near the cap are expensive. At 27.00%, $25,000 costs about $857 a month over 48 months, $763 over 60 and $704 over 72. Getting from the poor band into the fair band can cut hundreds of dollars from the monthly payment, which is why on-time payments, reported to the credit bureaus by most lenders, matter so much in the first year.

Registering and insuring a car in Quebec

A vehicle registered in Quebec needs winter tires from December 1 to March 15. If the car you are financing comes with summer tires only, budget for a winter set before the deadline rather than borrowing more. Insurance is shared between the SAAQ, which covers bodily injury, and a private insurer for damage to the vehicle. The lender will want proof of that private coverage before delivery.

Dealers in Quebec answer to the Office de la protection du consommateur (OPC). Check the dealer's licence, read every line of the contract, and turn down optional add-ons you do not want, such as an extended service contract. Quebec's 5% GST + 9.975% QST adds about $3,744 to a $25,000 vehicle, so confirm whether that tax is in the price or financed on top.

Before you sign in Quebec

  • In Quebec, the SAAQ covers bodily injury while private insurers cover damage to your vehicle. Lenders need proof of coverage before you take delivery.
  • Car dealers in Quebec are regulated by the Office de la protection du consommateur (OPC). Check that the dealer is licensed or registered before you sign, and contact the regulator if something goes wrong.
  • Winter tires are mandatory in Quebec from December 1 to March 15 on vehicles registered in the province — budget for them if your car doesn’t come with a set.

Car financing in Hull: your questions answered

What is a normal car loan rate in Hull with bad credit?

For a poor score (300–559), published estimates run from 19% to 35%. Fair scores of 560 to 659 usually see 12% to 19%, depending on income and down payment.

Can a lender charge more than 35% on a car loan?

No. The Criminal Code caps the annual rate at 35% since January 1, 2025. If an offer seems to exceed that once fees are included, ask for the full cost of credit in writing.

Does comparing loans through Car Loan Finder hurt my score?

No. We use a soft inquiry that has no effect on your credit score. A full check happens only when you choose to move forward with one lender.

Is Gatineau a good place to compare dealers too?

It is about 5 km from Hull, so it is an easy second stop. Dealers there follow the same Quebec rules under the Office de la protection du consommateur.

Do I need winter tires on a car registered in Hull?

Yes. Winter tires are mandatory in Quebec from December 1 to March 15 on vehicles registered in the province. Check whether your car comes with a set.

How quickly can I move from poor to fair credit?

There is no set timeline, but a year or more of on-time payments typically shows progress. Most lenders report those payments to the credit bureaus, and keeping card balances low helps too.
