When a bank says no, the next offer often comes from a dealer's finance office, and that is where the details matter most. A high rate is only part of the cost; fees and optional products can quietly add to the balance. Published Equifax estimates put poor credit at about 19–35% and fair credit at 12–19%, and the Criminal Code caps lending at 35% APR. Car Loan Finder is not a lender. We look for lenders and dealers that work with credit like yours, using a soft inquiry that does not affect your score.

Pointe-aux-Trembles is about 2 km away and Anjou about 5 km, so Montréal-Est buyers have plenty of surrounding areas to shop in. Boucherville (about 7 km), Varennes and Saint-Léonard (each about 8 km), Lachenaie (about 9 km) and Montréal-Nord (about 10 km) add further choice. The city sits in the H1B postal area, about 15 km from Montréal, Quebec's largest city. With this many dealers within a short drive, there is no reason to accept the first offer you see.

Which Montréal-Est lender fits your credit?

Where you borrow matters as much as your credit score. Banks and credit unions usually offer the lowest rates but expect good credit; specialist lenders approve more credit profiles at higher rates. Here is how the options compare.

Which Montréal-Est lender fits your credit?
Lender Best for How rates are set Watch out for
Bank Good to excellent credit Usually priced above prime; close to the 6.59% bank average Stricter approval; may require a larger down payment with lower scores
Credit union Members with fair to good credit Set by each credit union; often competitive with banks Membership required; rules vary by province
Manufacturer finance New vehicles, good credit Promotional rates set by the automaker A low rate may replace a cash rebate — compare both
Specialist (subprime) lender Bad credit, proposals, newcomers Higher fixed rates, up to the 35% legal maximum Read the total cost of borrowing before you sign
Buy here, pay here dealer When other lenders decline Often the highest rates allowed Limited vehicle choice; payments may not be reported to credit bureaus

Getting approved in Montréal-Est: a practical plan

  1. 1 Check your credit report You can get your credit report free from both Equifax and TransUnion. Dispute any errors before a lender sees them.
  2. 2 Set your budget Use the payment table above to find a payment that leaves room for insurance, fuel and maintenance.
  3. 3 Get pre-approved A pre-approval shows your likely rate and limit before you choose a car. Checking your options with Car Loan Finder is a soft inquiry.
  4. 4 Compare the total cost of borrowing Lenders must disclose the APR and total cost of borrowing in writing. Compare that figure, not only the monthly payment.
  5. 5 Keep the term as short as you can afford Longer terms lower the payment but cost more interest and raise the risk of owing more than the car is worth.

Car loans for every credit situation

Bankruptcy or consumer proposal

A first bankruptcy usually stays on your Equifax report for 6 years after discharge; a consumer proposal stays until 3 years after you complete it. Specialist lenders can approve you before those dates — often with a down payment.

No credit history

If you are new to Canada or have never borrowed, lenders look at income, employment and residency instead of a score. A larger down payment or a co-signer improves your options.

Self-employed

Expect to show recent bank statements and your Notices of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency instead of pay stubs.

Rebuilding after missed payments

On-time car payments are reported to the credit bureaus by most lenders. Choosing a payment you can always make is the fastest way to rebuild.

The 35% ceiling and what sits beneath it

Since January 1, 2025, the Criminal Code has capped interest at 35% APR. That protects you from the most extreme offers, but it does not make every offer below the cap a fair one. Two lenders can quote very different rates on the same file.

On $25,000 over 60 months, 27.00% means about $763 a month, against about $490 at the 6.59% bank average. With a gap that size, comparing even two written offers is worth the effort, especially when the surrounding areas offer so many dealers.

Add-ons that inflate a high-rate loan

Extended service contracts, rust protection, appearance packages and similar products are usually optional. When they are added to the loan, you pay interest on them for the full term, and at a poor-credit rate that interest can add a large share to what they cost.

Ask for the vehicle price, taxes and each add-on as separate lines. The 5% GST + 9.975% QST alone comes to about $3,744 on $25,000, so you want to know exactly what else is being financed before you sign.

Your protections when buying from a dealer

Car dealers in Quebec are regulated by the Office de la protection du consommateur (OPC). Before signing, confirm the dealer is licensed. If a promise is broken or a contract seems wrong after delivery, the OPC is where to turn.

Keep copies of every document, including the written offer and the final contract. Lenders also require proof of private insurance before delivery, since the SAAQ covers bodily injury but not damage to the car itself, so line up a policy before the signing appointment.

Local costs and protections in Quebec

  • In Quebec, the SAAQ covers bodily injury while private insurers cover damage to your vehicle. Lenders need proof of coverage before you take delivery.
  • Car dealers in Quebec are regulated by the Office de la protection du consommateur (OPC). Check that the dealer is licensed or registered before you sign, and contact the regulator if something goes wrong.
  • Winter tires are mandatory in Quebec from December 1 to March 15 on vehicles registered in the province — budget for them if your car doesn’t come with a set.

Montréal-Est car loan questions

Can I get a car loan in Montréal-Est with bad credit?

Yes. Specialist lenders approve scores in the poor band, usually at about 19–35%. Steady income and a down payment improve your terms.

What is the maximum interest rate on a car loan in Canada?

The Criminal Code caps it at 35% APR, effective January 1, 2025. Any offer above that is illegal.

Do I have to buy the extended service contract?

Generally no; it is optional. If you do want one, ask for its price separately and remember that financing it means paying interest on it too.

What would $25,000 cost with good credit?

At 9.50%, it is about $628 a month over 48 months or $525 over 60. Improving your score before borrowing can move you into that band.

Are dealers in Anjou or Boucherville worth checking?

Anjou is about 5 km away and Boucherville about 7 km, so both are easy to include. Ask each for a written offer and compare the total cost.

Does Car Loan Finder affect my credit score?

No. We use a soft inquiry to check your options. A full credit check happens only if you choose to apply with a specific lender.

Sources and methodology

Bank of Canada rates are updated automatically from the Bank’s official data. Credit-tier ranges are published estimates, not quotes, and are reviewed quarterly. Payment examples are calculated from those rates. Car Loan Finder is not a lender; your rate is set by the lender that approves you.
