Missed payments, a collection account or a maxed-out card can push a score into the poor band, where Equifax-based estimates put car loan rates between 19% and 35%. That range is wide, and where you land inside it depends on income, job stability and the size of your down payment, not only the number on your report. Car Loan Finder is a matching service rather than a lender. We review your file with a soft inquiry that does not touch your credit score, then show you lenders that work with credit in recovery so you can compare before committing.

From LaSalle, Hampstead or Saint-Lambert, each about 6 km away, to Côte-Saint-Luc, Outremont, La Prairie and Sainte-Catherine at roughly 7 km, there are plenty of nearby communities in which to compare dealers. Verdun's own postal areas are H3E, H4G and H4H, and the town is about 6 km from Montréal, the province's largest city. Because every Quebec dealer falls under the Office de la protection du consommateur (OPC), a lot a few kilometres away offers the same consumer protections as one around the corner, so judge it on the contract alone.

Banks vs. specialist lenders in Verdun

Where you borrow matters as much as your credit score. Banks and credit unions usually offer the lowest rates but expect good credit; specialist lenders approve more credit profiles at higher rates. Here is how the options compare.

Banks vs. specialist lenders in Verdun
Lender Best for How rates are set Watch out for
Bank Good to excellent credit Usually priced above prime; close to the 6.59% bank average Stricter approval; may require a larger down payment with lower scores
Credit union Members with fair to good credit Set by each credit union; often competitive with banks Membership required; rules vary by province
Manufacturer finance New vehicles, good credit Promotional rates set by the automaker A low rate may replace a cash rebate — compare both
Specialist (subprime) lender Bad credit, proposals, newcomers Higher fixed rates, up to the 35% legal maximum Read the total cost of borrowing before you sign
Buy here, pay here dealer When other lenders decline Often the highest rates allowed Limited vehicle choice; payments may not be reported to credit bureaus

Getting approved in Verdun: a practical plan

  1. 1 Check your credit report You can get your credit report free from both Equifax and TransUnion. Dispute any errors before a lender sees them.
  2. 2 Set your budget Use the payment table above to find a payment that leaves room for insurance, fuel and maintenance.
  3. 3 Get pre-approved A pre-approval shows your likely rate and limit before you choose a car. Checking your options with Car Loan Finder is a soft inquiry.
  4. 4 Compare the total cost of borrowing Lenders must disclose the APR and total cost of borrowing in writing. Compare that figure, not only the monthly payment.
  5. 5 Keep the term as short as you can afford Longer terms lower the payment but cost more interest and raise the risk of owing more than the car is worth.

Your credit situation, explained

Bankruptcy or consumer proposal

A first bankruptcy usually stays on your Equifax report for 6 years after discharge; a consumer proposal stays until 3 years after you complete it. Specialist lenders can approve you before those dates — often with a down payment.

No credit history

If you are new to Canada or have never borrowed, lenders look at income, employment and residency instead of a score. A larger down payment or a co-signer improves your options.

Self-employed

Expect to show recent bank statements and your Notices of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency instead of pay stubs.

Rebuilding after missed payments

On-time car payments are reported to the credit bureaus by most lenders. Choosing a payment you can always make is the fastest way to rebuild.

What a poor-credit loan really costs

At 27.00%, an example rate in the poor band, $25,000 costs about $763 a month over 60 months and about $665 over 84 months. Compare that with the bank average of 6.59%, where the same 60-month loan is about $490. The difference is the price of the credit history, and it is the main reason to treat this loan as a stepping stone rather than a permanent arrangement.

You can narrow that gap. A smaller vehicle price, cash down or a trade-in all reduce the amount on which you pay interest. Be wary of stretching to 84 months just to fit a larger car: at poor-credit rates the extra years add a large amount of interest, and you may owe more than the car is worth for much of the loan.

Rebuilding one payment at a time

Most lenders report on-time car payments to the credit bureaus. Every month you pay as agreed adds a positive line to your file, and over time those lines outweigh older late payments. The fastest route is choosing a payment you can make even in a bad month, then setting it up to come out automatically right after payday.

Keep other accounts in order too. A car loan paid on time while credit cards stay maxed out will not lift a score as quickly. Paying card balances down, avoiding new applications for a few months and checking your credit report for errors with the bureaus all help the car loan do its work.

Refinancing once your score recovers

In August 2026 the Bank of Canada reported an average of 6.83% on existing auto loans at chartered banks and 6.59% on new ones. Those numbers give you a target. After a year or more of clean payments, it can be worth asking whether a lender will refinance your balance at a rate closer to the good band of 7% to 12%.

Before you sign the original loan, ask whether it carries a penalty for paying it off early. A loan you can repay or refinance without a large fee keeps that option open. Remember the fixed costs that a refinance will not touch: SAAQ and private insurance coverage, and the winter tires required in Quebec from December 1 to March 15.

Local costs and protections in Quebec

  • In Quebec, the SAAQ covers bodily injury while private insurers cover damage to your vehicle. Lenders need proof of coverage before you take delivery.
  • Car dealers in Quebec are regulated by the Office de la protection du consommateur (OPC). Check that the dealer is licensed or registered before you sign, and contact the regulator if something goes wrong.
  • Winter tires are mandatory in Quebec from December 1 to March 15 on vehicles registered in the province — budget for them if your car doesn’t come with a set.

Car financing in Verdun: your questions answered

Can I get a car loan in Verdun after missing payments?

Yes. Lenders that focus on credit in recovery look at your current income and stability as well as your history. Expect a higher rate at first and a request for a down payment.

What interest rate should I expect with poor credit?

Published estimates for the poor band (300–559) range from 19% to 35%. The legal ceiling is 35% under the Criminal Code, in force since January 1, 2025.

Does Car Loan Finder pull my full credit report?

No. We use a soft inquiry that does not affect your score. A lender only runs a full check after you decide to proceed with its offer.

How long before I can refinance at a better rate?

There is no fixed date, but a year or more of on-time payments usually gives a lender something to work with. Check first whether your current loan charges a fee for early payoff.

Should I pick an 84-month term to keep the payment down?

Only if the shorter term truly does not fit. At the bank average of 6.59%, 84 months instead of 60 adds about $1,863 in interest on $25,000, and the gap is larger at poor-credit rates.

Do I need my own insurance if the SAAQ covers injuries?

Yes. The SAAQ covers bodily injury, but the lender requires private coverage on the vehicle itself. You will need proof of it before delivery.
