What a written offer should show you
A real offer is on paper, not on a calculator screen. It should state the vehicle price, taxes, any trade-in credit and down payment, the amount financed, the annual interest rate, the term in months, the payment, and the total you will have paid by the end. If any of these is missing, ask for it before you discuss anything else.
Pay close attention to the taxes. In British Columbia a $25,000 vehicle carries about $3,000 in GST and PST, and PST climbs above 7% on higher-priced passenger vehicles. A quote that leaves tax out, or rolls it in without showing it, makes the loan look cheaper than it is.
Then look for anything financed on top of the car: extended service contracts, payment protection, rust treatment or similar products. Some may be useful, but each one adds to the amount you borrow and pay interest on. You can ask for any of them to be removed and the offer reprinted.
Same car, different offers: how rate and term change the cost
Here is why the monthly payment alone can mislead. On $25,000, a fair-credit rate of 15.50% over 84 months comes to about $489 a month. The bank average of 6.59% over 60 months is about $490. The payments look almost identical, yet the first loan runs two years longer and costs far more in interest.
Push the rate higher and the gap widens. At a poor-credit rate of 27.00%, the same $25,000 is about $857 a month over 48 months, and still about $665 over 84 months. Published estimates by Equifax score band put fair credit at 12–19% and poor credit at 19–35%, so check where each offer falls against your own score.
The cleanest comparison is to ask every lender for a quote at the same term, ideally the shortest one you can afford. Even at the bank average, choosing 84 months instead of 60 adds about $1,863 in interest. Once terms match, the offer with the lower rate and lower total cost is the stronger one.
Warning signs worth questioning
Be wary when a salesperson talks only about the payment and avoids naming the rate. Ask for the annual rate and total cost in writing. If a quoted rate changes between the first conversation and the contract, ask why, and be ready to walk away.
Under the Criminal Code, interest above 35% APR has been illegal since January 1, 2025. An offer near that limit is lawful, but it usually means a larger down payment, a co-signer or a cheaper vehicle would improve your terms. Never sign a contract with blank spaces, and keep a copy of everything you sign.
Before you accept: insurance, tires and your licence check
Get your ICBC quote while you are still comparing. Lenders need proof of coverage before you take delivery, and a premium you did not plan for can turn an affordable payment into a strained one. Add the cost of winter tires too: they are required on most designated BC highways from October 1 to April 30, so check DriveBC for the routes you drive.
Confirm the dealer is licensed with the VSA before you sign; the authority is also where to turn if a deal is misrepresented. If you want more offers to compare, Car Loan Finder can check options with a soft inquiry that does not affect your credit score. It is not a lender, and most lenders it works with report on-time payments to the credit bureaus, which helps you rebuild.
Surrey's 10 postal areas, among them V3R, V3S, V3T and V4A, sit about 27 km from Vancouver, the largest city in British Columbia. White Rock is about 10 km away, Langley about 12 km and New Westminster about 13 km, which makes it easy to collect quotes from more than one dealer. Every quote should include 5% GST and 7% PST, about $3,000 on $25,000; PST rises above 7% on higher-priced passenger vehicles. Insurance comes from ICBC, and dealers are licensed by the Vehicle Sales Authority of British Columbia (VSA).
Questions about this topic
How do I know if a bad credit car loan offer in Surrey is fair?
Compare it with published ranges for your Equifax score band, such as 12–19% for fair credit. Then ask at least one other lender for a quote at the same term and compare the total cost, not only the payment.
Why does a longer term cost more if the payment is lower?
You pay interest for more months. On $25,000 at the bank average of 6.59%, an 84-month term costs about $1,863 more in interest than a 60-month one.
Can I remove add-ons from my car loan?
You can ask for any optional product, such as an extended service contract, to be taken off and the offer reprinted. Each add-on increases the amount financed and the interest you pay.
Is there a limit on car loan interest in BC?
Yes, a national one. The Criminal Code caps interest at 35% APR, a rule in force since January 1, 2025, and it applies in Surrey as everywhere in Canada.
Do I have to buy from a dealer in Surrey?
No. White Rock is about 10 km away and Langley about 12 km, so you can collect offers across the area. Whoever you buy from should be licensed with the VSA.
Will comparing several offers hurt my credit score?
Checking options through Car Loan Finder uses a soft inquiry and does not affect your score. Lenders you formally apply with may run a full credit check, so apply only once you are ready to compare real offers.
